BACKGROUND

In Nigeria, an estimated 84 million people—approximately 37% of the total population live below the poverty line. Factors such as ongoing conflict and insecurity, soaring inflation, and the effects of the climate crisis continue to fuel hunger across the country. Between June and August 2024, it was projected that 26.5 million Nigerians will experience acute food insecurity, a sharp rise from the 18.6 million affected at the end of 2023.

Nigeria frequently experiences droughts and floods, which severely disrupt agricultural productivity and heighten the vulnerability of rural communities. Insurgency and armed conflict have further strained limited resources, undermined development efforts, and worsened food and nutrition insecurity, particularly for women and children.

PROBLEM

1. Nearly 4.4 million children and 585,000 pregnant or lactating women in the northwest and northeast suffer from acute malnutrition and need urgent nutritional support.
2. In many rural and conflict-affected communities, families lack access to nutritious food, safe water, and proper sanitation, making children more vulnerable to illness and nutrient loss.
3. Across the country, millions of households struggle to access affordable, nutritious food, especially in rural and conflict-affected regions where droughts, floods, and insurgency have disrupted agriculture and food supply chains.
