Nutrition and food security

At AYGF, we recognize the vital importance of proper nutrition for young children, nursing mothers, and the wider community. We are committed to not only meeting these nutritional needs but also promoting widespread understanding of their significance.

UKRAINIAN WHEAT DISTRIBUTION PROJECT

In response to rising hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria’s northwest, AYGF in partnership with the World Food Program (WFP), implemented the Ukrainian wheat distribution project to support the most vulnerable populations in Kurfi, Safana, Batsari, Dutsinma, and Danmusa. In Katsina State.

The project was designed to meet the urgent nutritional needs of households affected by armed conflict, banditry, displacement, and climate-related shocks, including droughts and floods that have disrupted local agriculture and food supply chains, and support to restore dignity, reduce hunger, and strengthen the resilience of families.

Between September and November 2024, AYGF distributed 1,307.47 metric tons of wheat to 72,711 vulnerable individuals (14,542 households), achieving a 95% implementation rate across three distribution cycles. Each beneficiary received 9kg of wheat per month, totaling 27kg per person over the course of the intervention.

Beyond food distribution, the project integrated:

Community engagement and sensitization, Protection mainstreaming and GBV prevention, Disability inclusion

Community feedback mechanisms (CFM), and Capacity building for staff and local stakeholders.

General Food Distribution – Cash-Based Transfer (GFD-CBT) Project

The General Food Distribution – Cash-Based Transfer (GFD-CBT) project implemented by AYGF, and funded by United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) aims to address the growing challenges of food insecurity in Katsina State specifically in the following LGAs, Batsari, Danmusa, Dutsinma, Kurfi, and Safana. The project aims to provide support to 79,920 beneficiaries especially women, children, and displaced persons, through a cash-based assistance model.

The project is structured into two key components:

Cash Transfers for General Households: Direct monthly cash support to verified beneficiaries for purchasing essential food items.

Nutrition Top-Ups for Vulnerable Groups: Targeted support for households with pregnant and lactating women, and children aged 6–24 months, who receive vouchers redeemable for nutritious food.

BACKGROUND

In Nigeria, an estimated 84 million people—approximately 37% of the total population live below the poverty line. Factors such as ongoing conflict and insecurity, soaring inflation, and the effects of the climate crisis continue to fuel hunger across the country. Between June and August 2024, it was projected that 26.5 million Nigerians will experience acute food insecurity, a sharp rise from the 18.6 million affected at the end of 2023.

Nigeria frequently experiences droughts and floods, which severely disrupt agricultural productivity and heighten the vulnerability of rural communities. Insurgency and armed conflict have further strained limited resources, undermined development efforts, and worsened food and nutrition insecurity, particularly for women and children.

PROBLEM
  1. Nearly 4.4 million children and 585,000 pregnant or lactating women in the northwest and northeast suffer from acute malnutrition and need urgent nutritional support.
  2. In many rural and conflict-affected communities, families lack access to nutritious food, safe water, and proper sanitation, making children more vulnerable to illness and nutrient loss.
  3. Across the country, millions of households struggle to access affordable, nutritious food, especially in rural and conflict-affected regions where droughts, floods, and insurgency have disrupted agriculture and food supply chains.
MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE GENERAL FOOD ASSISTANCE – CASH-BASED TRANSFER (GFA-CBT) PROJECT
  • To meet the increased humanitarian needs occasioned by the persistent banditry and conflict in the northwest of Nigeria. Specifically, the project seeks to distribute a total of 1,963MTs of Ukrainian wheat to 86,389 vulnerable individuals including IDPS in Katsina State of Northwest Nigeria.
GOAL OF THE GENERAL FOOD ASSISTANCE – CASH-BASED TRANSFER (GFA-CBT) PROJECT
  • To contribute to the food security, nutritional well-being, and overall resilience of vulnerable households affected by conflict and climate-related shocks in five targeted wards of Katsina State by providing timely food assistance, livelihood support, and community-based resilience interventions
